1 out of 5 stars Not up to the job - free competition is much better!   July 18, 2010
happy chappie
I bought this after always using Norton products. I assumed it would be not much different from Norton but became frustrated at the complicated menu structure for changing settings. However what did it for me was when one of the family inadvertantly downloaded a couple of trojans. This product, which is supposed to be "always on" didn't detect the trojans in the download nor was it able to stop the virus multiplying - very disappointed. I tried all sorts of malware but nothing could clean up the problem, until I stumbled across Microsoft Security Essentials.
I was sceptible at first but it cleaned up the problem straight away and is very easy to set-up and use. Long and short of it I've now removed all McAfee and NAV products from our families PC's and have got all of them using the free MS product. So far all have enjoyed worry free surfing for almost three months. I'm never paying for security again!

1 out of 5 stars Good when it works   July 15, 2010

This product was loaded on to my computer when I bought it new. In the first year it worked perfectly, so I renewed my contract. Midway through the second year the security screen told me that Alltime scanning was switched of and my computer was at risk. This occured almost every time I received a Mcafee update or a Windows update the next time I switched on my computer. Online technical support helped me fix this problem (So they said) until the next time I received an update and the problem returned. Technical support then told me to uninstall and reinstall the product. This I did. Problem solved. Howev er the problem returned intermitantly always after receiving updates. Tech support level2 techs then attempted several times over the following months to solve the problem, usually by uninstalling and reinstalling the product, each time assuring me that the fault had been fixed once and for all. It was not. In the end I was afraid to switch on my computer after an update to be faced with a red security screen informing me that my computer was unprotected. Finally I contacted Mcafee HO who promised to ring me back within 24 to 48 hours. I pointed out that my computer was unprotected and wanted assistance from a high level tech. Only to receive the same response. I uninstalled the product for the last time. Norton security has worked perfectly since I installed it!

1 out of 5 stars Be Warned - They're Having Big Problems At The Moment   June 21, 2010

I've been a huge fan of McAfee for years but something has gone seriously wrong with the upgrade they ran in May of this year and it's causing people no end of trouble - the McAfee user forum is full of exceptionally unhappy bunnies.

1 out of 5 stars McAfee Internet Security 2010   June 9, 2010
Mr. J. N. Rice (UK)
The software appears genuine, however when installed and I attempted to register the software with McAfee I discovered the product had already been registered to another e-mail address. Therefore unable to register the product and receive product updates. Hence very dissatisfied with the purchase.

3 out of 5 stars Fair with flaws   June 4, 2010
Paul de Rooij (London, UK)
I used McAfee because it came bundled with my computer. However, its main flaws are:

1. It slows down your computer massively; the boot process on slower machines is painfully slow.

2. Even with all the McAfee bells and whistles, my computer was hit by a destructive rootkit or virus. McAfee techies (for which I paid) tried to remove, but only succeeded in further demolishing the content of my machine. After their intervention they didnt even know what was the cause. It is also disconcerting to see McAfee techies use third party tools to attempt to clean up your machine... none were designed by McAfee. One would expect one of the leading companies to use their own tools. In general, their emergency service to deal with the infection was next to useless.

3. It is also disconcerting to see that the weekly sweep of one's computer indicates an infection, but then it is not possible to obtain info on the nature of the threat.

4. The McAfee anti-spam product is next to useless. It slows down the download process, it shows the errant emails before putting them in the spam folder, and it misses a large percentage of the errant messages. It also doesnt provide a proper reporting service.

Before deciding on an anti-virus/firewall product, it pays to do some research.
