5 out of 5 stars The Saviour of Music   August 23, 2010

This album is absolutely terrific and engaging! I tell you something after 10 tracks I thought - wow that sounds like a great album to me! I would have felt so satisfied with the 10, but 18!
We have all been spoilt to heaven!

Tracks 17 and 18 really stood out to me - in fact all of them did! The intro to suite 2 gives you an actual taste of the actual music in some of the tracks and this stood out in track 17 to me.
You can really appreciate the time she took to make this album and the heart in it shines through!

This album is totally excellent and a delicious feast for the ears - I listened to it in it's entirety (Janelle herself has stated that this is how you should listen to it and she is right), and afterwards wanted to listen to it all over again. I have actually no interest in listening to anything else and will get suite 1 asap.

Her contemporaries should take serious note as to how things are done because in 20 years time this will still be relevant - infact they should be worried because the jig is up!

This is instantly classic music. Thank you Janelle Monet for showing music as an art form is not totally dead! I just hope your talent is rewarded, nurtured and left to run unfettered if this is what you can do!!!!!

I am waiting with baited breath for the videos and 4th suite.

Every reviewer on here so far has been totally accurate. Everyone who cares about this artist or music full stop buy a copy of her album NOW!! The Archandroid

5 out of 5 stars Astonishing   August 17, 2010

I only approached this album after reading the very positive reviews on Any Decent Music? & I'm not someone who would usually like an artist with roots in R&B/Hip-hop, (I like classic rock albums) but Janelle Monae's stunning voice combined with her musical creativity and quirkiness all add up to a totally refreshing pop album which puts the likes of Lady Gaga and similar 'style over substance' poseurs to shame.

Admittedly for the un-initiated, the unusual move of classical leading into rap on "Dance or Die" might make you wondering what you've got yourself into. By the time you get to "Locked Inside", which smacks of MJ's Off The Wall, you'll be totally sucked into the rhythm. It's not all catchy beats though, there's sixties style ballads (Sir Greenhorn) Folk (57821) Funk (Tightrope) Rock (Come Alive) and just plain weirdness, (Neon Gumbo, Make The Bus). Each new track takes you in an unexpected direction, keeping even the lengthy 18 track disc feeling fresh all the way through. Repeated listens just add to the enjoyment, and you'll find yourself appreciating the uniqueness of each track.

Keeping this all together is the richly textured and varied voice of Monae, sometimes soulful, sometimes powerful, sometimes screeching like a rock chick, and at one point hilariously parodying her squeaky voiced pop contemporaries in the song "Wondaland"

If I was to garner one criticism it's that Monae is sometimes too eager to take a backseat for her support acts. No more obvious is this than on "Make The Bus," a song which has all the correct musical elements to work, but you keep waiting for Janelle to snatch the microphone out of Of Montreal's hands and take control, but it never comes.

Truly refreshing from start to finish, The Archandroid is the perfect antidote for those music lovers disillusioned with the modern pop charts. For those who aren't, it's time to find out what you've been missing.

5 out of 5 stars So Fresh, So Clean   August 17, 2010

What a fantastic album. From the liner notes in the album, you know you're in for something different, and Janelle Monae certainly delivers on all the hype surrounding this release.
While the executive production of Big Boi and the influence of Andre 3000 are unmistakable, Janelle also cuts her own mark.
The opening 4 or 5 tracks blend into each other, and while you lament the end of one track, you are very quickly loving the next.

Fans of Outkast or Beyonce will love this immediately, but others should also pay attention. Janelle is well worth the attention.

I only purchased this album after hearing "tightrope", and reading the reviews, but I wasn't really excepting much, just another R&B album with a couple of good tracks and the rest fillers. But its turned out to be a gem, I've played it constantly for 2 weeks and fallen in love with a different track with each listen. I can't recommend it enuff.
