Excellent low to mid range camera - easy to use, menus are easy to follow - fun to use!

2 out of 5 stars Poor Build-Quality   July 1, 2010

I LOVED this camera the first day I had it. Unfortunately, it did not last longer than one day. There were three specific faults with it:

1) The camera's LCD display was unbelievably pixelated, making it almost impossible to see close-ups or images in poor light.

2) The lens' zoom-motor made a constant "whirr" noise which was really annoying. It "whirred" even when not in use. And when the video-mode was used all you could hear on playback was the noise from the lens zoom-motor.

3) The shutter button stuck after appproximately 1 day and just 300 images rendering the camera unuseable.

I returned this camera and eventually forked out an extra £100 for the Panasonic FZ38

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ38EB-K Digital Camera - Black (12.1MP, 18 x Optical Zoom) 2.7 inch LCD

and have not been disapointed. The Panasonic FZ38 is a great camera which I would highly recommend above the fujifilm S1600.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT camera - but NOT a DSLR   June 25, 2010

I bought this camera as a "bridge" between my little Kodak point and shoot and eventually getting a real DSLR. I thought I would be able to learn a lot more about aperture priority, shutter priority and full manual settings by playing around with this camera first, before going to the real thing. But even though this is a FABULOUS camera for what it is (the picture quality is great, you can play around with the macro mode and various priority settings to get some really nice shots), it is NOT a DSLR.

For example, in aperture priority mode for this camera, you only get 2 options: the max or the minimum aperture setting, but nothing in between. I assume it's the camera's way of preventing you from taking really awful shots, but I was hoping for the ability to experiment more, and make mistakes. Don't get me wrong, you can still take really bad photos if you want, but the settings are designed to make it as easy as possible to get a good picture, instead of enabling you to learn how to do that yourself.

There are a few work-arounds, though. For example, if you want to mimic a shallow depth of field shot, you can select Macro mode with Aperture priority and then fully zoom in on your subject. If the rest of the scene is physically far enough away in the background, you can get a nice shot with the subject in focus and the background objects out of focus. I've included some of my shots above, in the customer images for reference. The tulip ones, for example, are mine.

However, if you're looking to get a really shallow depth of field taking a picture of grapes, for example, where one grape is in focus and the rest of the grapes in the bunch are out of focus, it's going to be difficult - if not impossible - with this camera. Maybe I'm still enough of a newbie that I can't figure it out and it actually IS possible, but I had some photographer friends take a look and they couldn't do it either. However, we tried the same shot with their SLR and got it perfectly on the first try.

All that said, I've been VERY pleased with the quality of the photos from this camera - it's definitely a step up from the compact point and shoot variety - and it's still small enough to pop into your backpack and hit the road. I love the pics I've been able to take with it, even in Auto mode. The zoom is also excellent - great magnification and very little blurring. The wide angle is also nice, giving a broad sense of space when kept at its widest.

So, if your end goal is to get better quality photos compared to a compact, and be able to play around a LITTLE bit with the aperture, shutter and ISO settings, then this is the camera for you. But if you secretly yearn for the functionality of a DSLR, you'll find out in an afternoon or two that there's only so much you can do with this little guy.

Overall, I'm very happy with the Fujifilm Finepix S1600 and I like the photos I'm taking with it, but I still can't wait for that first DSLR.

1 out of 5 stars RUBBISH!   June 21, 2010

From what I expected of the camera it is useless! I wanted to upgrade my s5600 to take videos and photos when I go to British Superbike and Motogp events. The s5600 isn't of a high spec but I took some fantastic sharp action shots and videos were really clear and sound was good. Took the s1600 to silverstone last weekend and it was awful.

Video - sound quality is crap. fuzzy sound like an untuned tv on every video. The camera has auto tracking focus which I can't seem to switch off so as I followed a rider it constantly went in and out of focus.

Pictures - Had camera set to sport mode with fast shutter speed but when I focused on a rider and tracked him before taking picture shutter speed was still too slow and the focus would always be on the track not the rider. I took tons of pictures and not one came out clear.

Okay I'm not a pro photographer but when I buy of higher spec I do expect it to take decent photos and videos and be an improvement on my old camera. This will be returned to the shop (not bought from amazon). Maybe an okay camera for portrait shots but I'm giving it a bad review because compared to the s5600 it is far worse.

4 out of 5 stars Good for price.   June 14, 2010

I wanted some thing that I could hold on with one hand.
A view hole to still see the object when the sun is on the screen and can not be seen.
Good photos and HD 720 video. Read proper reviews of it and / or download the manual.
Sound on video is not good, but can not have every thing for that price.
It can be a point and shoot or a use your own settings camera.
AA recharge batteries are for me a plus as costs are cheaper.
Go for it.

July 2 2010.
Found Amy Greer has a near perfect review for this camera, but would not give the camera 5 stars because of the bad video sound.
Have taken photos of flying planes with zoom and have had no problem with subject out of focus, but smaller subjects it may have problems, as I have not tested that yet. Tweek the menu settings to fast focus may improve the photo.
The lens cap could do with a velcro pad to stick it to the shoulder strap as it gets in the way on the swinging string cord. Shoulder strap is a plus for walking around hands free, camera around neck / shoulder. Recharge batteries 2250 mah still going strong and will get spare set for long holidays, AA alkaline batts went dead in three days.

If you want a true dslr camera spend at twice or three times this camera's cost. I am happy with my A4 printed photos. Spend less on camera, more on holiday!!!!
