The screenplay is by Nick Hornby and, like all his books, he takes a low-key drama about quite ordinary people and turns it into a really witty and gripping story. The acting is superb on all fronts. All the other aspects of the film, such as the music and the portrayal of the 1960s setting (which looks really great on Blu-ray) are really well done. No one aspect of the film is absolutely amazing, but I thought the fact that every component of it is such high quality makes it an excellent and very watchable film. I Liked It July 7, 2010 F. Connolly (Scotland) I wasn't sure what to expect from this but ended up enjoying it. I love Carey Mulligan and think she did an amazing job. Rosamund Pike and Peter Sarsgaard were also great. Set in the 60s, it's a coming of age story about a talented young girl and her zeal for life. An interesting drama with a few twists and very comical in places. Just good entertainment and worth watching. A lovely piece of nostalgia June 27, 2010 Pandora2 A very well researched and presented view of life as it was in the late 50s and early 60s. Recommended; particularly for those who lived through this period and for youngsters who may not realise how much life has changed in the past 50 years. Could Do Better! June 21, 2010 Cicero (South London, UK) This film would have made a charming (but forgettable) featurette in a BBC4 60s season but sadly, it is just too dull and insubstantial to bear the weight of being a full length feature film. I had read most of the Amazon reviews and was really looking forward to seeing this movie. Yes, the script is amusing but was I alone in finding the character of Jenny extremely irritating? In my day, she would have been labelled "a humping brat" (don't worry, this phrase has nothing whatsoever to do with the sexual act!) I found the vacuous Helen more interesting. What was her story? What became of her? Either becoming a courtesan or married to a dodgy businessman, no doubt. And what exactly was David going to do? Marry Jenny bigamously? Just keep stringing her along with excuses about having to delay the wedding? Break it off? I agree with another reviewer that the entire supporting cast were horribly underutilised, both male and female. The art direction is perfection - you really feel like you're back there in those dreary suburban kitchens/living rooms and sparkly West End night clubs. And I couldn't believe that the actor playing David is American - his accent (to my ears) was flawless. End of term summary - a C minus (bags of potential but could do better!)
