Amazon.co.uk Review With hairy warts, a stern-looking unibrow and one extremely protruding buck-tooth, Nanny McPhee is a wonderfully comedic substitute for Mary Poppins in this entertaining family fantasy. By loosely adapting Christianna Brand's Nurse Matilda children's books of the 1960s, Oscar-winning screenwriter Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility) has also given herself the plum role of Nanny McPhee, who can tame even the most unruly children with a tap of her magic walking stick. Her latest challenge is the bratty brood of a recent widower Mr. Brown (Colin Firth), who's under pressure to find a new wife or lose his much-needed allowance from wealthy Aunt Adelaide (a tailor-made role for Angela Lansbury). His love for scullery maid Evangeline (Kelly Macdonald) remains unspoken as he wincingly woos the eagerly merry widow Mrs. Quickly (Celia Imrie), but Brown's raucous rugrats have a plan to make things right, especially after they've come under the benevolent influence of Nanny McPhee, whose peculiar brand of discipline works wonders for everyone involved. Both quintessentially British and universally appealing, this wildly colourful comedy (thanks to a bold palette of costume and production design) was capably directed by Kirk Jones, whose appreciation for comic actors was equally apparent in his critically acclaimed 1998 comedy Waking Ned. With just a hint of darkness to offset the whimsy, Nanny McPhee offers a splendid match of director, cast and material, guaranteed to please Wallace & Gromit fans and anyone else with a taste for British zaniness.-- Jeff Shannon

*** A REVIEW FOR THE BLU RAY ***
As I suspected "Nanny McPhee" is a delight on BLU RAY with a vastly improved picture quality that is quite beautiful at times.
The bonus features are generous too:
1. Casting The Children
2. Village Life
3. Nanny McPhee makeover
4. Deleted Scenes
5. Gag Reel
6. How Nanny McPhee Came To Be
7. Feature commentary by the Director Kirk Jones and Children
Because it's set at 2:35 aspect, when I used the Zoom feature on my Sony, it did stretch the picture a tad, but it still looked great.
Language subtitles include English (Hard Of Hearing), French, Canadian French, German, Spanish, Latin American Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Dutch, Norwegian, Portuguese, Greek, Cantonese and Traditional Mandarin.
Emma Thompson's creation is part Mary Poppins, part Wicked Witch Of The East. She arrives when called for (title above) looking grotesque and fearsome (17 nannies have been dispatched by the children in varying ways since their beloved mother's passing). But Nanny McPhee is not about to be sent packing by any screaming brat. With her strange way of arriving in a room without using doors and her walking stick that seems to have magical powers, she is a force to be reckoned with. And then there's her disappearing ugliness - Nanny McPhee seems to grow prettier as the children stop being horrid and start behaving and doing good things. And on it goes to its lovely snowbound ending...
Nanny McPhee is actually an incredibly moral little tale and has a delight to it that is very hard to get right in a kid's movie. Both Colin Firth and the lovely Kelly MacDonald are superb as the well-matched couple that can't see that they were made for each other, while Emma Thompson is both funny and beautifully luminous (perhaps she's an angel working on behalf of an absent mum?). Throw in the fabulously crass Celia Imrie as a truly wicked marriage gold-digger who will see all the children sent off to an orphanage and Angela Lansbury as a bumbling, but well-meaning aunt - and it all just so works.
To sum up - as a replacement for your old DVD - or as a new purchase for the kids and adults alike - this Blu Ray reissue is recommended wholeheartedly - and it's reasonably priced online too.
A rather lovely little movie really...
Nanny McPhee August 17, 2010 JJ1869 Emma Thompson at her best, this was a 'must have' to add to the collection for visiting grandchildren (and the grandparents on occasion...). Brilliant
a sad version of Mary Poppins, no fun , bad script July 28, 2010 V. Joshi (UK) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
a sad version of Mary Poppins, no fun , bad script -- gives the wrong message about beauty-- inner and outer- nanny's warts disappear as the children become good-- what a sorry script
